Theme of the Workshop

The theme of the Workshop on "Control Theory" is to share the life long experiences of three instructors in very specialized topics pertaining to control theory. Dr Wonham would highlight his 50 years of his teaching and research experience in control theory. Academician Stanislav N. Vassilyev would present his very valuable teaching and research experience in the state-of-the-art logic based control. Professor Rajan would present his vast experience in symbolic computing and control with a special emphasis on logical control and its applications.

About the Instructors

Walter Murray Wonham received the B.Engrg. degree in engineering physics from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1956, and the Ph.D. degree in control engineering from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England, in 1961. From 1961 to 1969 he was associated with the Control and Information Systems Laboratory at Purdue University, the Research Institute for Advanced Studies (RIAS) of the Martin Marietta Co., the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, and (as a National Academy of Sciences Research Fellow) with the Office of Control Theory and Application of NASA's Electronics Research Center. In 1970 he joined the Systems Control Group of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto, Canada. In addition he has held visiting academic appointments with the Department of Electrical Engineering at MIT, the Department of Systems Science and Mathematics at Washington University, the Department of Mathematics of the University of Bremen, the Mathematics Institute of the Academia Sinica (Beijing), the Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur), and the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Florianopolis). His research interests have lain in the areas of stochastic control and filtering, the geometric theory of multivariable control, and more recently in discrete event systems from the viewpoint of formal logic and language. He has authored or coauthored about seventy-five research papers as well as the book Linear Multivariable Control: A Geometric Approach. Dr. Wonham is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the Royal Society of Canada. In 1987 he was the recipient of the IEEE Control Systems Science and Engineering Award, and in 1990 was Brouwer medallist of the Netherlands Mathematical Society. For the period 1992-96 he held the J.Roy Cockburn Chair in Engineering and Applied Science at The University of Toronto. Dr Wonham would present his life time record of his outstanding research in Control Theory. Lucky are those who register for this workshop. Learn from the Leader.

Prof. Dr. E. G. Rajan is the Founder President of the Pentagram Research Centre (P) Ltd., Hyderabad, India. He is an Electronics Engineer and a Professor of Signal Processing having about 37 years of experience in teaching, research and administration. He has a number of publications to his credit. He is a professional member of ACM and he is an editor of the journal of AMSE, Barcelona, Spain. He received his Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering, (Signal and Image Processing), from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, U.P., M.E. degree in  Applied Electronics, from Madras University, the then famous DMIT in Electronics Engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, Madras and B.Sc degree in Physics from Madras University. His contribution to the state-of-the-art of Electronic Warfare has been well recognized in the Government and industrial sectors. He was a noted teacher in the department of Electrical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He received Distinguished Scientist and Man of the Millennium Award from Who is Who Bibliographical Records, Cambridge, 2000. He authored many books like, Symbolic Computing – Signal and Image Processing, Electronic Order of Battle Records of Military Radars, Computers and Information Technology and Foundations of Information Technology. He is the father of a novel paradigm Symbolic Computing In the Framework of Markov’s Constructive Mathematical Logic. Two of his fifteen Ph.D scholars are involved in the design of digital circuits using organic molecules and some of them are working in the novel area of Genomic Signal Processing. He has brought out more than 25 original concepts. One such concept is Codon Space, which advocates the theory of Life Forms as Subspaces of the Information Space called Codon Space. Another concept is a Mathematical Transform, which goes by his name as Rajan Transform. This transform is ideally used for Pattern Recognition and Analysis purposes. He leads the company in his own professorial style and the company is technically strong and steady.
